AIDS

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus, which causes AIDS.

HIV attacks the immune system which helps our bodies to fight infections. HIV finds and destroys a type of white blood cell that the immune system needs to fight disease.

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is the final stage of the HIV infection. It can take years for a person infected with HIV to reach the stage of AIDS. Despite their illness they continue to work and people are living with HIV and AIDS.

It’s taking too long to develop vaccine for AIDS. This is because, HIV has a remarkable capacity to become unrecognizable to the human immune system, and the virus binds to T–cells of the human immune system to infect them using a surface molecule.

This makes it difficult for researchers to isolate which immune response should be targeted. In addition, there are several HIV types so researchers must also determine which strain to work with. If the vaccine is too specific to one type, it will lack a universal effectiveness.
