MANILA, PhilippinesHealth Secretary Esperanza Cabral has hailed the launching of the HIV hotline and urged the party-list AKMA-PTM to collaborate with government agencies in leading the fight against HIV/AIDS in a renewed public awareness campaign to stem the spread of the deadly virus.

During a recent meeting, Cabral said she appreciated the launching of AKMA-PTMs HIV hotline (546-0691) amid an unprecedented increase in the number of reported HIV infections in the country of four persons a month last January. The infection rate is the highest since 1984, prompting the Department of Health to declare an HIV epidemic in the country.

AKMA-PTM spokesperson Kevin Carreon, in a press statement, said the party-list has made the initial move to synchronize its anti-HIV campaign with those of the Philippine National AIDS Council (PNAC) and the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control (NCDPC), which includes the National AIDS STI Prevention and Control Program or NASPCP.

We realized there is an information vacuum on HIV that needs to be filled right now. AKMA-PTM party-list is encouraged by the response to its hotline to fill this information gap, said Carreon.

Those who met with Cabral were PNAC secretariat director Dr. Ferchito Avelino, NCDPC (NASPCP) program manager Dr. Jose Gerard B Belimac, and AKMA-PTM spokespersons Carreon and Mary Rose Dayao.

Cabral instructed PNAC to invite AKMA-PTM to the AIDS Summit scheduled on April 12.
