Three persons died of AIDS and over 220 fresh cases of HIV positive infections were detected in Mizoram in the last two months, officials said.
126 and 101 fresh cases of HIV infections were detected in April and May respectively, State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) officials said.
Describing the increase in number of HIV positive cases as “alarming”, the officials said in the last 20 years, 171 people, including 72 women, had died in the state due to the deadly disease.
Of the 171 deaths, three deaths were reported during April and May this year, they added.
HIV infection was first detected in the state in 1990.
“The situation is more alarming due to the fact that the main factor for the spread of the disease is through sexual contact”, an official said.
