A WEEK after a 35–year–old HIV–positive patient died at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, his brother came to the hospital’s Anti–Retro Viral Centre on Thursday morning and claimed the body.
This comes a day after The Indian Express reported that a body of an HIV–positive patient was lying unattended near the main entrance on Wednesday.
Later, the paper also approached the Gujarat State Network of People with HIV/AIDS (GNSP) and Greater Involvement of People with HIV/AIDS (GIPA) about the incident.
Manoj Parmar from GNSP said: “After this news–paper approached us, we met the neighbours of the deceased in Bapunagar. It was difficult for us to locate them as the youth’s address was not mentioned properly in the card.” He added: “The deceased, who was a native of Joanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, worked in the Bapunagar area of Ahmedabad. He was aware of his infection, and according to his neighbours and brother, he had tried to remain isolated.” According to GNSP officials, the relatives of the youth did not know about his death. Hospital authorities had earlier said that when they tried to contact the deceased’s brother, he had disconnected the calls.
