HIV–infected girl Bency, 15, died at the Thiruvananthapuram SAT Hospital at 3 pm on Thursday.

The body will be kept at the mortuary of Kollam District Hospital and the date of funeral will be decided later.

Bency had been admitted to the hospital as she began to lose the balance of her body.

Her bodyweight had come down during the past two years from 29 kg to 16 kg. Her condition had worsened in February 2008 and she had undergone treatment at the SAT hospital.

Bency, a Class IX student of Adichanalloor Panchayat High School, had passed to the Class X this year. Bency’s younger brother Benson, who is also HIV–infected, is a Class IX student of the same school.

Benson and Bency caught national media attention in 2003 when they were denied admission to the school in their native village. When the children were admitted to Kaithakuzhi Govt LPS near their home, the guardians of other students in the school protested and even threatened to take away their wards. All the attempts made by the then Government to create awareness among the parents did not succeed and later special class was arranged for both children at their home.

The parents of Benson and Bency had died of AIDS. Their father died in 1997 and mother in 2000.
