Demand Soars, Authorities To Boost Supply Of Condoms

WITH the demand for condoms escalating during the festival time, authorities have ensured an adequate supply from the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society for the purpose. The demand is usually high during this ten day periodspe cially when people visit the city from various parts of Maharashtra.

Darshana Vyas, Project Director of Pathfinder International which works with Maharashtra State AIDS Control society (MSACS) says that like every year the organisation prefers to augment the Condom supply for the commercial sex workers at the Budhwar Peth. Meena Kurlekar at Vanchit Vikas – NGO that deals with intervention programmes of commercial sex workers and is involved in prevention of HIV says that they had received ten cartons with 6000 condoms in each box.

At Kaya Kalp – another NGO working in the Budhwar Peth area-Seema Waghmode pointed out that they had received 44 cartons for distributing the condoms free of cost.

According to Dr Dilip Jagtap, Acting Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), MSACS supplies the condoms via Pathfinder International to various NGO's working in the field of prevention of HIV. While an approxi mately five lakh condoms are distributed every month according to Jagtap the demand increases during the this festival period. Last year some seven lakh condoms were distributed during the festival.

The PMC has also taken cognizance of the huge influx of people visiting the city and have displayed posters on safe sex at vari ous ganesh mandals. During this time 100 street plays were held to create awareness about safe sex.

MSACS Project Director Ramesh Deokar said that National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO)'s project on social marketing of condoms has also been launched.

The DKT company is involved in setting up outlets across the city to sell condoms at concessional rates, Deokar said. When contacted Anil Pargaonkar, Zonal manager of the DKT company said that they were also planning to set up outlets at the high risk areas like Budhwar Peth and others. Presently there are 1,500 outlets in the district where condoms are sold at concessional rates.
