World AIDS Day Observed at AFMC
The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) observed 'World AIDS Day' on Wednesday with an aim to address various issues concerning the Human Immuno–deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and its effect on the health of children.

The theme selected for this year’s world AIDS day was 'Universal Access and Human Rights.' According to Director and Commandant, AFMC, Lt Gen D P Vats, World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for individuals, communities and community leaders to take action and ensure that global targets for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care are met.

Children below 15 years age constitute 2.1 million of all cases. Children are innocent victims of HIV as more then 90 per cent of them acquire this disease from their parents through trans–placental route (parent–to–child transmission), he added.

A handbook entitled ‘Patients’ Guide Book on HIV’ was released by Geeta Vats. She also distributed prizes to children who participated in the drawing and craft competition held earlier in the day. Over a 100 HIV +ve children attended the function along with their parents and caregivers.
